Ashkenazi

Central European Jewry

Ashkenazi refers to Jews of Central and Eastern European descent, as distinct from Sephardic Jews of Iberian or Middle Eastern origin.

The term derives from the medieval Hebrew name for Germany.

Ashkenazi Jews developed distinct religious customs, Yiddish language, and cultural traditions.

Today they constitute the majority of world Jewry: Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, an Ashkenazi synagogue.
