checkpoints
Border crossing stations
Checkpoints are designated stopping points where progress is verified or recorded.
At border checkpoints, authorities inspect travelers and documents.
In video games, checkpoints save your progress so you can resume from that spot after dying: I keep dying right before the checkpoint.
In computing, checkpoints preserve system state for recovery.
Security checkpoints screen for prohibited items: the TSA checkpoint at the airport.
