aliyah
Called to read
Aliyah is the immigration of Jews to Israel, considered a return to the ancestral homeland.
The word comes from Hebrew meaning "ascent" or "going up," reflecting both the spiritual elevation of the act and Jerusalem's geographic position in the hills.
Her family made aliyah in the 1990s after the Soviet Union collapsed.
The term also refers to being called up to read from the Torah during synagogue services—another form of ascent, this time to the raised platform where the Torah is read. (Capitalized Aliyah is a given name.)
