shtetl

Old Jewish village

A shtetl is a small Jewish town or village in Eastern Europe, particularly in the regions that were part of the Russian Empire, Poland, and surrounding areas before World War II.

The word evokes a distinctive way of life—tight-knit communities organized around synagogues, markets, and Yiddish-speaking households: My grandmother grew up in a shtetl in Poland.

The shtetl and its culture were largely destroyed during the Holocaust, but the term persists in discussions of Jewish history and identity.
