Tel Aviv
Mediterranean Israeli city
Tel Aviv is Israel's second-largest city and its commercial and cultural center, located on the Mediterranean coast.
Founded in 1909 as a Jewish neighborhood outside the ancient port of Jaffa, it grew rapidly and is now the heart of a metropolitan area home to much of Israel's population.
Embassies and international business concentrate here rather than in Jerusalem: The tech scene in Tel Aviv rivals Silicon Valley.
The full name Tel Aviv-Yafo reflects its 1950 merger with Jaffa.
