unit

One distinct piece

Unit is formed from unity, a relative of unite; among all three words the common theme is one.

A unit is a single thing, usually one among many like things.

Separate dwellings within a building or complex (apartments, condos, flats) are often called units.

A department within an organization can be a unit, like a hospital’s intensive care unit.

Anything consisting of component parts that work together may be divided into small functional parts called units.
