volt

Potential difference unit

A volt is the standard unit for measuring electrical potential—the force that pushes electric current through a circuit.

Named after Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, volts describe the "pressure" of electricity: household outlets typically deliver 120 or 240 volts depending on the country.

The battery produces nine volts.

Higher voltage means greater capacity to do electrical work.
