garrison
Troops at base
A garrison is a body of troops stationed at a military post, or the post itself: The garrison held out for three weeks.
To garrison a place is to station troops there for defense.
The word suggests permanent or semi-permanent military presence rather than troops passing through.
A garrison town is one where soldiers are regularly stationed.
