division

Math's opposite multiplication

Division is the act of separating something into parts, or the state of being so separated.

In arithmetic, division determines how many times one number contains another: twelve divided by four.

A division can be a distinct section of an organization—a military unit, a corporate department, a sports league grouping.

Division also names disagreement that splits a group: The issue caused deep division within the party.
