room

Space within walls

As a count noun, room designates an enclosed space large enough for human occupation, and typically featuring a floor, walls, and a ceiling.

As an uncountable noun, room simply means space adequate for some purpose: There isn’t enough room to work here.

This meaning is extended figuratively to mean capacity: I see some room for improvement here.

Context sometimes extends the use of room to the people in it: work the room; the whole room exploded in laughter.

As a verb, room has a meaning similar to lodge: She rooms with a distant relative in the city.
