A semester is one of the two main divisions of an academic year, typically lasting about fifteen to eighteen weeks.
Most American universities and many high schools operate on a semester system, with fall and spring terms: I'm taking five classes this semester.
The word contrasts with quarter and trimester systems, which divide the year into smaller segments.
