class
Division by type
Class most often implies the existence of an organizational scheme or hierarchy in which a class is a unit.
The things so organized are often people, especially in educational settings, where class describes all of the students studying a particular subject or at the same level in their learning.
Class can also describe the subject of study itself, where it is interchangeable with course.
In social hierarchies, classes apply to socioeconomic levels, and sometimes class is used to characterize things that are admired for their association with higher levels: Her new boyfriend has really got class.
