section

Slice of whole

Section looks like it ought to have an underlying verb form, but in modern English we have only reminders of one, in bisect and dissect, both of which offer a clue to what section is about: a part that has been separated from a whole.

In some cases, the section is only nominally discrete: book sections.

A section of an orchestra is one that plays the same family of instruments.

A section of a class is one meeting at the same regular time, with the same students and instructor.

As a verb, section means to divide or separate into discrete parts.
