joule

Measure of work

A joule is the standard unit of energy in the International System of Units, equal to the work done when a force of one newton moves an object one meter.

It measures energy in all forms—electrical, mechanical, thermal: A typical AA battery stores about 9,000 joules.

Named for the physicist James Prescott Joule. (Capitalized Joule refers to the physicist.)
