chip
Snack or flaw
Common to various meanings of chip is the idea of something small, sometimes flat, and being one of a number of like things, perhaps formerly attached to something larger.
A single potato will yield many chips, which are extremely thin and flat if you’re in the U.S., and sticklike if you’re in the UK.
A chip may break off of something, such as a piece of crockery.
A poker chip is a small disk with some value assigned to it for betting.
To chip something is to remove chips from it, or reduce it to chips.
