infantry
Soldiers on foot
Infantry is the branch of an army that fights on foot, as distinguished from cavalry, artillery, or armored units.
The term also refers collectively to foot soldiers themselves: The infantry advanced under heavy fire.
Though modern infantry may ride vehicles to battle, they're defined by fighting dismounted.
An infantryman is a soldier in this branch.
