barracks

Soldiers sleep here

Barracks are buildings that house soldiers or other military personnel.

The word is plural in form but can take singular or plural verbs: The barracks was built in 1942 or The barracks were in disrepair.

By extension, any large, plain building housing many people may be called a barracks.

To barrack, in British and Australian usage, is to jeer or heckle—or conversely, to cheer for a team.
