townhouse

Narrow urban home

A townhouse is a narrow, multi-story dwelling that shares walls with adjacent units, typically in a row of similar structures.

The term originally described an urban residence maintained by wealthy families who also owned country estates.

In modern real estate, townhouse usually means a unit in a planned development with shared walls but separate entrances: They bought a three-bedroom townhouse in the suburbs.

Also spelled as two words: town house.
