ward

Deflect or protect

A ward is someone under the protection or care of another—typically a child placed under a guardian's supervision by a court: The orphan became a ward of the state.

Ward also means a division or section, especially in a hospital (the maternity ward, the psychiatric ward) or a political district within a city.

To ward something off is to deflect or prevent it: garlic to ward off vampires, ward off a cold.

A ward in a lock is a ridge that prevents the wrong key from turning.
