meter

Device that measures usage

Meter has two main clusters of meaning.

One refers to the basic unit of length in the metric system, equal to about 39.37 inches.

The other concerns rhythm and measured patterns—the meter of a poem describes its regular arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables, while musical meter organizes beats into recurring groups.

A meter is also a device that measures and records quantity: gas meter, parking meter, electric meter.

As a verb, to meter something is to measure or regulate its flow: The system meters water usage throughout the building.
