house
Place called home
A house is a building that people live in.
Though it is closely associated in meaning with home and is interchangeable with it in many contexts, it is not a related word.
Without modification, house typically refers to single family dwelling, but there are many variants, such as an apartment house (a building consisting of several or many residential units), or a guest house, which may be a large structure for many paying visitors, or a small house for one.
When you house someone, you provide accommodations for them.
When one thing houses another, it provides a protected and enduring place for it: The new museum will house the painter’s entire collection.
