countdown

Ten to zero

A countdown is a backward count to zero marking the start of an event—most famously a rocket launch: Ten, nine, eight...

The term extends to any final period before something significant: the countdown to Christmas, the countdown to election day.

As a verb, to count down is to mark this decreasing sequence.
