hertz

One cycle per second

Hertz is the unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second, used to measure everything from sound waves to radio signals to computer processor speeds.

A healthy young ear can hear frequencies from about 20 hertz to 20,000 hertz.

Named after physicist Heinrich Hertz, the unit is abbreviated Hz: a 3.5 gigahertz processor, the 60-hertz hum of electrical equipment. (Capitalized Hertz is also a car rental company.)
