counter

Flat service surface

Counter can function as a noun, verb, adjective or adverb, with a number of different meanings, behind many of which lies the idea of counting.

In the most basic sense, a counter is something that measures, such as a Geiger counter (which detects levels of radiation) or a bean counter (a slang term for an accountant).

Another common meaning of counter is a place where counting may be done (a checkout counter in a store), although kitchen counters don’t typically involve counting.

When you counter something, you oppose, contradict, or act in opposition to it.
