Enlisted armed fighter
A soldier is first and foremost a member of a government military force.
This meaning informs all others, which borrow some aspect of the idea of a uniformed fighter.
Fighters with paramilitary or guerrilla groups may also be called soldiers.
It is also a term used appreciatively for someone who makes a great effort in adverse circumstance or against strong odds: She was a passionate soldier for the cause of social justice.
As a verb, soldier may simply mean to serve in that capacity.
The phrasal verb soldier on means to persist in effort, despite fatigue or difficulties.
