duplex

Split residential building

Duplex describes something with two parts or layers.

A duplex is a building divided into two separate living units, typically side by side or stacked: They bought a duplex and rent out the other half.

In telecommunications, duplex refers to two-way transmission—full duplex allows simultaneous sending and receiving, half duplex alternates.

Duplex paper is printed on both sides.
