bed

Where you slumber

The core meaning of bed, and the most familiar one, is the place where one sleeps.

Since nearly all creatures are comfortable sleeping horizontally, bed has come to designate a number of large, flat surfaces: truck bed, flower bed, seabed.

Bed is closely associated with two activities that take place there—sleep and sex—so go to bed means retire, usually for the night, and in bed with can a euphemism for a sexual relationship or an unexpected relationship: a local police officer in bed with drug runners.
