take

Single recorded performance

From a fairly specific early meaning—grasp with the hands—take has become a frequent and varied verb.

It retains its original meaning and has come to encroach on the territory of get, from which it differs in one important respect: when you get something you simply acquire it, but when you take something it becomes yours by an act of will.

Take is also present in phrasal verbs in which the core meaning is not very evident, such as take after, take apart, take in, and take up.

In the 20th century, the noun take assumed the meaning of an idea or assessment: What’s your take on the president’s speech?
