document

File with information

A document is a piece of written or printed matter containing information or evidence: legal documents, historical documents, government documents.

The word emphasizes official or formal status—a scribbled note isn't usually called a document, but a signed contract is.

In computing, document extends to any file: word processing documents, PDFs, spreadsheets.

To document something is to record it systematically: She documented every step of the process.

Documentation means supporting records or, in technical contexts, instructional materials for software.
