surrender

Yield to defeat

The verb surrender, without an object, describes agreeing to stop fighting or resisting.

With an object, to surrender something is to give it to someone who demands or asks for it (surrender your passport).

Give up is a synonym for both uses.

The noun surrender is an instance of surrendering, and is used to talk about a formal ending of hostilities: We’re studying Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.
