carry

Move while holding

Carry shares core ideas with another frequent verb, bring.

When used literally, the subject of carry is a person or thing that is capable of holding or transporting an object, and the object so held would probably not be moving on its own: Ask the porter to carry your bags to the car.

When used figuratively, carry includes the idea of accompaniment that may also be present with bring: a crime that carries the death penalty.

Without a direct object, carry may include the idea of succeed or pass: the motion carried on a vote of 23-7.
