up

Out of bed

Five parts of speech but one core idea: up is something being, going, or staying higher.

Up also has some figurative uses, especially in phrasal verbs, that stray from its definition: look up (I looked up an old friend when I was there.) and end up (How did we end up with an extra ticket?).

When contrasted with down, up usually means north, higher, more intense, better, or faster.

Up sometimes adds an idea of thoroughness, completeness, or entirety: consider the difference between finish and finish up.
