perceive

Become aware of

Although you can perceive something through any of your senses, people use this verb most often to talk about perception through the eyes or with the mind: We perceived a large, dark shape moving toward us. I perceived a note of disappointment in her voice.

Sometimes perceive can refer to the future, in which case its meaning is similar to anticipate or imagine: I perceive difficulties arising when you try to implement this plan without everyone on board.
