read

Absorb written words

Read, mainly a verb, means to interpret meaning by way of signs—more often than not, through the symbolic system of written language.

Whether you are reading a book, article, review, or report, you are taking in the meaning of it.

If the thing you are reading is not expressed in language, read still means you are interpreting on the basis of signs: She can read the forecast just by looking at the sky.

A read is an informal way to characterize a book or something else that you read, and is usually preceded by an adjective: His latest novel is a slow read. I need an interesting read for the airplane.
