overtake

Catch and pass

To overtake is to catch up with and pass someone or something moving in the same direction: The sports car overtook the truck on the highway.

British English uses overtake where American English prefers pass.

Figuratively, overtake means to come upon suddenly or unexpectedly: Exhaustion overtook her.

Events, emotions, or consequences can overtake someone—suggesting being caught by something you can't outrun.
