demand

Supply's economic counterpart

A demand is an order that something be done, handed over, or attended to.

There is usually an implied power imbalance between someone who makes a demand and the party the demand is addressed to; children do not legitimately make demands to their parents.

The verb demand has a predictable meaning of order someone to do something: The governor demanded the resignation of the secretary as soon as the scandal came to light.
