begin

Set in motion

Begin means to start or commence something, or to come into being.

It applies equally to actions, processes, and states: Let's begin the meeting, Winter begins in December, She began to understand his point.

Begin often implies the first step in a sequence that will continue or develop.

The past tense is began; the past participle is begun.

Unlike start, begin tends toward slightly more formal contexts and doesn't extend to mechanical operations—you start a car, not begin it.
