gain

Advantage you keep

The idea of the verb gain is closely related to get and obtain: when you gain something, it comes into your possession or becomes associated with you.

Gain is typically used for immaterial things (gain experience, gain access, gain insight), but you can also gain weight, which is not immaterial.

A gain is anything obtained or acquired and usually has positive connotations: an investment strategy intended to maximize gains.

A gain in a quality or attribute is an increase: The new procedure gave us a significant gain in efficiency.
