windward

Toward the wind

Windward means the direction from which the wind is blowing—the opposite of leeward.

A windward shore receives the wind directly; a leeward shore is sheltered.

In sailing, going windward means sailing into the wind: We tacked to windward for hours.

The windward side of an island tends to be wetter and more exposed than the leeward side.
