rigging

Mast support system

Rigging is the system of ropes, chains, and cables that support and control a ship's masts and sails.

By extension, rigging refers to any arrangement of lines and equipment for lifting or supporting: stage rigging, climbing rigging.

To rig something is to set it up, often hastily or improvisingly.

Rigging also means fraudulent manipulation: election rigging, price rigging—the fix is in.
