jib

Bow's triangular sail

A jib is a triangular sail set forward of the mast on a sailing vessel.

The phrase the cut of someone's jib means their general appearance or manner—originally how a ship could be identified by its distinctive sail shape.

Separately, to jib is to balk or refuse to proceed, said of horses and extended to people: He jibbed at the idea of working weekends.

A jib is also the projecting arm of a crane.
