foresail
Bow-mounted sail
A foresail is the principal sail set on the foremast of a ship—the mast nearest the bow.
On a schooner or other vessel with multiple masts, it's the lowest sail on that forward mast.
The term appears in sailing contexts and nautical literature: They hoisted the foresail as the wind picked up.
