jibing

Being in accord

Jibing has two distinct sources.

From one comes the sailing term: to jibe is to shift a sail from one side to the other when sailing downwind, or for the boat itself to change course this way.

From the other comes the sense of agreeing or being consistent: His story doesn't jibe with the evidence.

This second sense is common in American English.

Jibing also serves as the present participle of jibe meaning to taunt or mock, though that sense is often spelled gibing.
