close-hauled
Into the wind
Close-hauled describes a sailing vessel traveling as nearly as possible into the wind, with sails pulled tight and set at a narrow angle to the hull: We sailed close-hauled for three hours to reach the harbor.
The term captures the maximum upwind angle a boat can achieve—typically 30 to 45 degrees off the wind direction.
