wind
Air in motion
Wind is two words in contemporary English, both of which have noun and verb forms.
The wind that is mainly a noun denotes the natural movement of air in the atmosphere, resulting in a detectable current.
This wind (short vowel) typically takes verbs of sound or movement: blow, howl, whip, buffet.
The regular related verb wind is mostly used as the participle winded, meaning out of breath.
The other wind (long vowel) is mainly an irregular verb that means to change direction—once, frequently, or in a regular circular pattern: The river winds through the countryside. Wind the rope around the post.
A winding staircase is one that circles a central point as it ascends.
