bluff
Fake confidence play
Bluff has two main threads.
One involves deception: to bluff is to mislead others about your position, especially in poker or negotiation.
She called his bluff and he folded.
A bluff is the act itself or the person doing it.
The other thread is geographical: a bluff is a steep cliff or riverbank with a broad face.
As an adjective, bluff describes a person who is direct and good-naturedly abrupt in manner—hearty rather than subtle.
