foremast
Ship's front pole
The foremast is the mast nearest the bow of a sailing ship.
On vessels with multiple masts, it stands forward of the mainmast and typically carries the fore course and fore topsails.
Sailors stationed to work the foremast and its rigging were called foremast hands or foremast men, a term that came to designate ordinary seamen generally, as distinguished from officers who worked aft.
