gale

Sustained powerful wind

A gale is a very strong wind, stronger than a breeze but typically not as destructive as a hurricane or tornado.

Meteorologists define it precisely on the Beaufort scale, but in general use it simply means powerful, sustained wind: The ship struggled through the gale.

Figuratively, a gale of laughter is a sudden burst of loud, uncontrolled laughing. (Capitalized Gale is a given name or surname.)
