port
Left aboard vessels
The many meanings of the noun port share the idea of an opening or conduit through which something passes, be it cargo, data, or air: What ports do you have on your computer? Chicago is the largest port on the Great Lakes.
A separately derived port accounts for the class of sweet wines originally from Portugal.
As a verb, port means to carry a weapon, or to send or transmit via a port.
In the computer age, the dominant usage for both noun and verb is in relation to the various ports built into hardware devices and the movement of data through or across them.
