planing
Flattening a board
Planing is smoothing a surface with a plane—a woodworking tool that shaves thin layers from wood: He spent the afternoon planing the rough boards.
The word also describes skimming across water, as a boat does at speed when its hull rises and rides the surface: The speedboat was planing across the lake.
